Crystal Group’s Denim Factory Attains the Second LCMP Platinum Label from WWF
Zhongshan Yida Apparel Ltd. (Yida), Crystal Group’s denim factory in Zhongshan China, received for the second time the highest Low Carbon Manufacturing Programme (LCMP) Platinum Label from conservation organisation WWF-Hong Kong in 2014 for its continuous improvement in environmental performance and carbon intensity.
It was one of the four highest Platinum Labels the programme awarded in 2014 and the second one Yida obtained for two consecutive verifications. As of today, five Crystal Group factories have joined LCMP, bagging 6 Platinum Labels out of a total of 11 the programme have awarded since its launch in 2010.
To attain a label in LCMP, companies have to go through accreditation that comprises four carbon performance areas, namely carbon intensity reduction, greenhouse gas management practices, energy efficiency of factory’s general utilities and energy efficiency of the manufacturing process. Requiring companies to conduct a verification every two years, Yida undertook its third-party verification last year and scored over 80 out of a maximum of 100, thus qualifying for the LCMP Platinum Label.
Carbon reduction measures at Yida to date have included replacing steam with solar energy to provide heat to the dormitory and production line, replacing steam-operated central air conditioning system with a water curtain and exhaust fan, as well as recovering water condensate from the laundry and dormitory steam system. These measures lower carbon emissions by more than 3,370 tonnes annually, equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide absorption by 150,000 trees.
WWF-Hong Kong’s Low Carbon Manufacturing Programme (LCMP) aims to reduce carbon emissions generated by manufacturing facilities in China. It also encourages companies to increase transparency in supply chain carbon emissions and uncover inefficiencies in resources use.
